Walker Books has snapped up Katherine Webber’s standalone YA novel The Revelry in a two-book deal.
A story of "best friends, bad luck and the consequences of breaking the rules in a town built on secrets and superstitions", The Revelry is Webber’s third YA novel with Walker Books, following her 2017 debut novel Wing Jones, and YA Prize-shortlisted Only Love Can Break Your Heart, released in 2018.
The synopsis explains: "The Revelry follows two best friends, Bitsy and Amy and the strange events that unfold after they sneak into the notorious end-of-school party in the woods, meant only for those at the end of their high-school careers. When she wakes the next day, Bitsy can’t remember anything from the night before. Weirder still, whenever she tries to speak about the Revelry, Bitsy chokes on the words. But this is just the beginning, and what starts out as a run of bad luck starts to feel like a curse. As Bitsy’s life goes from bad to worse, things only get better and better for her best friend. It's as if there’s only so much luck to go round and Amy’s getting all of it."
Annalie Grainger acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to The Revelry and a further title from Claire Wilson at RCW. The novel will publish on 6th January 2022.
Grainger said: "We are delighted to once again be publishing the powerhouse that is Katherine Webber. She brings her immense writing talent to this atmospheric book about the allure of local superstitions and the power dynamics of female friendship. Readers everywhere are in for a thrilling ride.”
Webber also writes under the name Katie Tsang with her husband Kevin Tsang for younger readers, publishing Farshore's series Sam Wu and S&S series Dragon Realm. Next year will also see the publication of her jointly authored YA novel Twin Crowns (Farshore), written with Catherine Doyle.
She said: "Writing The Revelry has been a real labour of love for the past five years and I am so excited that it is finally going to be out in the world. I knew I wanted to write about how intense and complex and important female friendship is, and Walker Books has been so supportive while I found the shape and the heart of the story. I'm so proud to be a Walker author and very grateful to have such a fantastic team behind the book.”
