David Walliams has announced his latest book in the World’s Worst story collection, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books (HCCB).
The World’s Worst Monsters promises to showcase 10 “terrifying tales” that will be illustrated by Adam Stower and will publish on 6th July 2023 in hardback, with simultaneous e-book and audio editions.
“Readers will revel in delight at the array of frightfully fun characters, including Lord Phantom who has woken up after 500 years to discover that his home has been turned into a theme park, Amber who is convinced her parents and little brother are vampires, Buster who discovers his new pen pal might just be a werewolf and Rose who is on the trail to uncover the true story of the Loch Ness Monster,” HCCB said.
The World’s Worst Monsters is the seventh in the World’s Worst series. Walliams has sold 23.8 million books for £141m, according to Nielsen BookScan TCM, with 2013’s Gangsta Granny his bestseller, at 1.6 million copies sold in paperback.
Cally Poplak, executive publisher, said: “Since joining HarperCollins Children’s Books just over a year ago, I’ve been dazzled by David’s creativity as a children’s writer and touched by seeing first-hand the delight he brings to children through his books and at events. The World’s Worst Monsters is funny and heart-warming, and magnificently illustrated by Adam Stower – the perfect book to share the pleasure of reading.”
Nick Lake, fiction publisher, added: “The World’s Worst Monsters is an electrifying new instalment in the bestselling World’s Worst series. Joyously funny – I laughed out loud on the very first page! – it’s also David’s most ambitious and emotionally satisfying collection to date. Inspired by Hammer Horror, gothic literature and B-movies, each of these 10 stories – lavishly illustrated by the preternaturally versatile Adam Stower – is full of surprises, full of laughs, full of frights, and ultimately full of heart, in the way that only Walliams can.”
Walliams said: “This was a blast to write and so I hope it is a blast to read. My son gave me the idea for the book as he loves monsters even more than I do.”
Stower commented: “I have always loved monster stories ever since I was little, so illustrating The World’s Worst Monsters has been terrific fun! The mixture of thrills and laughs is irresistible!”
