Welbeck Publishing Group has acquired the “definitive” collection of Terry O’Neill’s photographs of The Beatles, for publication ahead of the 60th anniversary of the band’s debut album “Please Please Me”.
Joe Cottington, associate publisher, acquired world rights in all languages to The Beatles by Terry O’Neill from Carrie Kania, creative director at Iconic Images. The book, which contains never-before-seen images, will be published in hardback on 16th March 2023, ahead of the 60th anniversary of the release of “Please Please Me” on 22nd March.
A deluxe boxed edition, limited to just 200 copies, will publish on the same day at £495, including a photographic print with O’Neill’s signature, available exclusively through Iconic Images.
Spanning five decades, The Beatles by Terry O’Neill collects more than 300 photographs of the band by the photographer from the very earliest days of their fame to the solo years and beyond, showing The Beatles recording some of their biggest hits in Abbey Road, relaxing at home, singing together at parties, performing on stage, in unguarded moments backstage and much more.
With text sharing O’Neill’s "evocative" memories of his friendship with the band alongside detailed captions by Terence Pepper, former head of photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, the “beautifully produced” book is described as “a must-have for lovers of The Beatles". An exhibition including many of O’Neill’s images of the band is also set to launch at the Iconic Images Gallery in London. “Roll Over, Beethoven! The Decade That Changed Rock ‘n’ Roll” will run from 21st February to 31st March 2023.
Cottington said: “Terry was an incredible photographer with a truly magic touch, one that allowed him to capture the biggest stars in the world looking utterly relaxed and unguarded. His images of The Beatles are no different: intimate, enchanting and, much like the man himself, effortlessly cool.”
Kania commented: “Having this opportunity to publish such a comprehensive look at Terry’s Beatles archive has been a real joy and discovery. We meticulously went through all of Terry’s negatives and prints and digitalised all the images to the highest calibre. It’s terrific to see these all in a brand new light. Every picture truly does tell a story.”
