Welbeck is to publish Our Stories: 75 Years of the NHS from the People Who Built it, Lived It and Love It edited by Professor Stephanie Snow, who will contribute at least 80% of the book’s profits to NHS Charities Together.
Editorial director for non-fiction Oliver Holden-Rea acquired world all language rights, including audio and serial, from Katie Fulford at Bell Lomax Moreton. It will be a lead hardback for Welbeck publishing in June 2023.
“This is such an important book and it couldn’t be in better hands than with Oli and the team at Welbeck, who impressed Professor Snow and I with their instant enthusiasm and publishing vision for the project,” said Fulford.
With a foreword from Adam Kay, Our Stories “tells the incredible tale of our national health service through the voices of patients, nurses, doctors, porters and ordinary people”. Snow is the director of the NHS at 70 project, the first digital archive of NHS history, and a historical consultant on the BBC television show “Call the Midwife”. She commented: “Our Stories tells a new history of the NHS and is a tribute to all the amazing people who have contributed their stories to the archive. I’m absolutely delighted to be working with Katie and Oli and his team, who bring such passion and care to the book, and hugely grateful for the support of Adam Kay and NHS Charities Together.”
Holden-Rea said: “The NHS is a national institution that is very much created, run and cared for by people, so it felt fitting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its creation with an amazing collection of voices by those same people. Stephanie has done a wonderful job of collating and representing a wide range of the population, each with their own fascinating story, and we’re delighted to have Adam Kay’s support in getting this to readers across the UK and in raising money for NHS Charities Together.”
