Wildfire has picked up Gabino Iglesias' The Devil Takes You Home, with publication slated for August 2022.
Fiction publisher Jack Butler bought UK and Commonwealth from Francesca Davies at Lutyens & Rubinstein on behalf of Melissa Danaczko at the Stuart Krichevsky Agency. US rights were sold in a six-figure, two-book deal to Mulholland Books after a six-way auction.
The Devil Takes You Home will be set along the US-Mexico border and follow reluctant hitman Mario, who is forced into a life of crime to finance his daughter’s exorbitant medical bills after a devastating diagnosis. His family is soon shattered, and he’s barely made a dent in the stack of bills when he is presented with an offer to steal two million dollars from a drug cartel.
Butler commented: "Gabino Iglesias is a name to remember. The Devil Takes You Home is a blistering thriller, impossible to resist and extremely powerful. While the novel sets off at breakneck speed, what really shines through are the heart-breaking flourishes as we witness Mario lose his humanity in real-time, desperately trying to claw back the family he has lost. We are incredibly pleased to welcome Gabino to the Wildfire list."
Iglesias said: "I'm absolutely delighted that The Devil Takes You Home will be published by Wildfire in the UK. I love what they do and Jack Butler and his team have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish and all the talent and passion to get it done. After years of dreaming about publication in the UK, to have it happen in such spectacular fashion has made the experience even sweeter. I look forward to connecting with readers in the UK next year."
Gabino is a writer, journalist, professor and literary critic living in Austin, Texas. He is the author of 2015's Zero Saints and 2018's Coyote Songs, both published with Broken River Books.
