William Collins has signed The Forgotten Sense: On the Nose and Perceiving Smell by Stockholm University psychology professor Jonas Olofsson.
Publishing director Myles Archibald acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Paul Sebes at Sebes & Bisseling. North American rights were sold to Peter Hubbard at Mariner, HarperCollins US; and German rights have gone to Markus Naegele and Jacob Thomas at Luchterhand BTB, Penguin Random House, Germany. The Forgotten Sense will be published in Sweden by Natur & Kultur.
In Forgotten Sense, Olofsson explains why we undervalue the "profound impact that scent has on human and animal life. The synopsis continues: "From the ancient writings of Aristotle and Lucretius, to contemporary aromatherapy practitioners and cutting-edge scientific research, he is our guide to how people have understood — or misunderstood — smell down the centuries."
Olofsson said: “What a delight to have this wonderful deal with Myles Archibald who bought the book alongside Peter Hubbard in the US even before it was out in Sweden!”
Archibald added: “Forgotten Sense is such a timely book: not only packed with fascinating insight on the sense of smell, but also how to regain it after Covid-19."
