Yale University Press London has acquired Charlotte Blease’s "provocative" manifesto on artificial intelligence (AI) use in healthcare, which explores "why AI is better placed to save lives".
Managing director and publisher Heather McCallum acquired world rights directly from the author; Dr Bot: Why Human Doctors Fail Us and How AI Can Save Lives will be published in September 2025.
"In this groundbreaking study, Blease, who is associate professor at the Participatory eHealth and Health Data Research Group at Uppsala University, Sweden, reveals how AI could provide us with the most reliable physician in history," the synopsis says. "Drawing on first-hand interviews with world-leading authorities in AI, doctors and patients themselves, Blease shows how technology is already changing things for the better. From diagnosis and second opinions to treatment and aftercare, AI has the potential to revolutionise healthcare – if we give it a chance and implement it carefully."
McCallum said: "This is an urgent and ultimately hopeful work, beautifully written, tackling one of the most important issues for all of us – the unavoidable limitations of conventional care. Patients and professionals alike will need to read this book."
Blease added: "Our health systems are creaking and our overworked doctors are failing us. My book is the first to lay out a bold manifesto for an AI-powered healthcare revolution. It is centred on the limitations of our doctor’s human brains. By leveraging the power of AI, I argue, we can improve the care of patients."
