Yellow Kite has signed The Happy Nomad, a “self-confessional, observational and darkly humorous” memoir by “#vanlifer” Charlotte Bradman.
Nicky Ross, editorial director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Bradman’s “inspirational story of finding salvation and liberation in a campervan following the re-possession of her home” from Simon Trewin at Simon Trewin Creative working with Dawn Mason at Dawn Mason Inc. Yellow Kite will publish The Happy Nomad in hardback, audio and e-book in May 2024.
The Happy Nomad tells the story of Bradman’s journey from domestic violence, poverty, grief and mental trauma to finding freedom on the road in her campervan. The synopsis goes on: “From the moment the fateful letter from the bank lands on her doormat, bringing an end to years of financial struggle to keep up with payments, through to her new life in her trusty campervan, Charlotte’s story is an engrossing tale of resilience and fortitude, as she finds a new way of living.
“Learning what really is important to happiness – a recharging van battery, a dry bed and an unspoilt view of the sea so she can indulge her love of wild swimming – The Happy Nomad will appeal to anyone dreaming of a simpler life."
Ross said: “Charlotte’s story really struck a chord. The dream of homeownership and possessions had become a nightmare, but in the process of losing it all and taking to the road she finds the space for real growth and connection. It is a story that will resonate with many."
Bradman said: “I was overwhelmed by the number of people who found something in my story that resonated with their own. It is my sincere hope that my story will inspire others and show that there are alternative ways to live, beyond the heavy weight of debt and working a nine to five.”
