Zephyr, the children’s imprint at Head of Zeus, has seized a "supernatural standalone" YA book by Efua Traoré.
Editor Lauren Atherton acquired world all-language rights, excluding German, in Sister Spirit from Clare Wallace at Darley Anderson Children’s Book Agency. The book blends African myth and history with a contemporary drama, and will be publishing in April 2024 in paperback, e-book and audiobook.
The synopsis says: "Sixteen-year-old Tara, a mixed-race girl adopted by white parents, has never felt like she truly belonged. When her nights become haunted by terrifying visions, Tara embarks on a journey to Nigeria in search of her roots. Tracing her dreams to the Olumo Rock that’s thought to possess mystical powers, Tara joins a nearby boarding school where she must piece together the clues to work out the meaning of her nightmares, and make a choice that could cost her her life."
Traoré said: "Growing up in Nigeria as a mixed-race kid and then moving to Europe often had me musing over identity and belonging. Writing this story felt particularly close to my heart. Sister Spirit was inspired by a visit to Olumo Rock in Nigeria, which protected the Yoruba for centuries – witnessing inter-tribal wars, invasions by Dahomian Agojie, missionaries and colonialists.
"I remember sensing its magical presence, almost as if the rock wanted to tell the things it had seen. I am grateful to my brilliant agent Clare, for believing in Sister Spirit and finding her a new home. Lauren has been welcoming, and I feel very honoured to have Zephyr in my corner, as I take my first steps writing for an older age-group."
Atherton added: "I instantly loved the dark mystery at the heart of Efua’s story, drawing on Nigerian myth and history to tell a powerful story about identity, belonging and sisterhood. Sister Spirit casts an instant spell, conjuring up the friendships, rivalries and romances of boarding school life with such energy."
Wallace commented: "Efua is such a talent and this is a truly unique and gripping read. From the first meeting with Lauren it was clear that an exciting match was made. I’m delighted that the creative and driven team at Zephyr will be publishing Sister Spirit."
