Booker Prize-shortlisted author Paul Bailey has died aged 87, his agent at RCW Literary Agency (RCW) has confirmed. He is survived by his partner Jeremy Trevathan.
The novelist appeared twice on the Booker shortlist, with Peter Smart’s Confessions (Fourth Estate) in 1977 and Gabriel’s Lament (Penguin) in 1986.
Bailey received various prizes and awards over his career, including the George Orwell Prize and the E M Forster Award.
His novels were published by Jonathan Cape, Fourth Estate and Bloomsbury and his poetry by CB Editions.
The author’s agent Matthew Marland said: "Paul was one of RCW’s longest-standing and most beloved authors. We shall all miss him greatly."
